In our new media world, an important part of the financial professional’s job will be looking for signs of groupthink and therefore sudden future reversals: a lack of real debate, certainty around a consensus, passionate pleas for urgency and aggressive denigration of dissenting views.

People can change their views remarkably quickly. The real world can impinge particularly fast and hard in finance. However, most people are still polite to each other and try hard to listen and be rational. In this respect, finance retains more resistance to groupthink than politics and also academia, to which we turn next.
