CHAPTER NINE

I awoke with a slight hangover due to the white lightning I had consumed the previous evening. I looked out of the window of my motel room. It was a clear cold day and the dew on the grass was frozen. After showering I dressed in a blue tweed skirt and turtleneck sweater. Then I sat down before the dresser and began blowing my hair dry. There was a knock on the door.

"Come in."

It was Joe-Bob looking bright and chipper as a groundhog on February 1st.

"Mornin', Eve. Did you sleep okay?"

"Like death," I replied, instantly sorry that I had used that phrase.

"How would you like to come up to the main house for breakfast? Ma wants to meet you."

Well, this was more than I had counted on—a command appearance before Granny Ginger herself. Obviously the activities of the previous night—had helped get my introduction. As I've pointed out, we L.U.S.T. agents often use sex to get what we want. Sometimes it's a nice way to do business.

"Let me just finish drying my hair, Joe-Bob, and I'll be right with you."

"Fine, Eve honey. I'll be waitin' in the office."

I wondered if I should take the camera with me to the house. I decided to chance it. After I finished drying my hair I put my lipstick and comb in the carrying case, threw it over my shoulder, and went to meet Joe-Bob.

"Who's going to cover the motel?" I asked.

"Shucks, Eve. Ain't nobody gonna be wantin' to stay here anyhow. If they come by and find nobody at home they'll just beep the horn. I'll hear 'em up at the house."

The autumn morning was a bit brisk and I shivered as we stepped out into the air.

"You cold Eve?"

"Yes," I said. "Maybe I ought to go back and get a jacket."

"Take this."

Joe-Bob took his red lumberjack's wool shirt off and threw it around my shoulders. It was so large, it hung nearly to my knees. He took my hand and led me around to the back of the motel.

"We live up there," he said, pointing up the mountainside.

Almost hidden by a thick growth of trees I saw the corner of a house which overlooked the lake. As we walked up the pathway to the house, Joe-Bob told me that the lake was called Cheat Lake.

"Because it's cheated so many people out of their lives. You see, it's an artificial lake. There used to be a little old town where the lake is now. The buildings still stand 'cause when the State made this lake, they just flooded the water over it. Now if people swimming in the lake happen to get too far beneath the surface they can get caught on the old wooden fences or telegraph poles. Sometimes their bodies are never found and if they are, it's often weeks or even months later."

I looked at the dark green water and shuddered picturing myself floating in it if I messed up this case. The house had once been a ramshackle cabin but additions had been built on the front, back, and sides.
