EMILY

“I can’t believe that witch was in your house.” Parker says for the millionth time. “What is your mom playing at? And Carter too?” She puffs out her cheeks as she struggles to process what just went down at my house. “He knows that you and Holly shouldn’t be in the same room together.”

“Right?” I’m still shook rom the whole ordeal. My mom isn’t all that innocent either. She knows me and Holly haven’t been friends for years, so surely she should know that there’s no way I’d want to come home and find her sitting comfy in my house. Carter on the other hand… it’s clear to see his was nothing more than some fucked-up sadistic plan. “This is all down on Carter. No doubt about it. He would have masterminded this plan, so I’d have no choice to come face to face with Holly. I guess that explains why he stayed out of my way today. He was busy plotting. Only he didn’t think it through well enough because I think it’s well and truly backfired in his face.” Parker doesn’t seem all to convinced at my theory, but I know that I’m right. My gut is squirming just thinking about it and my instincts have never served me wrong yet.

“Why would he stoop so low? I know Carter gets a sick kick out of making your life hell, but it all just seems a little far-fetched—even for Carter.”

I know where she’s coming from. At first, I didn’t think that Carter would have the brains for something as well planned out as setting me up with Holly, but then that’s also what makes it so genius. Why would anyone suspect the likes of Carter? “Well, that’s probably what the psycho wants me to think, only I know that it was him. It was written all over his face when I walked in on them all playing happy fucking families.”

“Maybe your mom and Ash just wanted to meet her?”

“Come on. Do you really believe that?” Who is this girl and what has she done to my best friend? “Carter hasn’t so much as mentioned Holly before this morning, and now he’s acting like the two of them are Woodville’s golden couple or something.” I don’t miss the air of jealousy in my voice, and I hate myself for stooping to their level. I shouldn’t feel anything towards them, so I try my hardest to shut it down and out both Carter and Holly to the back of my mind. Hopefully if I leave the two of them shut away long enough, they might just disappear. I know it’s wishful thinking but damn, a girl can dream, right?

Parker shakes her head at me, still refusing to believe that Carter could possibly be behind such a cruel and sadistic act. “But what would he even gain by bringing Holly back to the house?” Parker watches me closely, searching my face as though she’ll be able to summon the answer from me before she comes up short.
