The reminder of the unit motto reassured DJ—and reminded him that he had work to do. Slowly, he pulled away from Tammie, reluctant, but hoping this was only the beginning.

He was still hoping for that when his phone rang an hour later while he stood in the checkout line at the nearby big-box store. Two suitcases filled the cart. Smiling, he pulled out the phone. He’d left Tammie a note, but she probably didn’t appreciate him leaving her alone. Or going shopping without her.

But it wasn’t Tammie. His sister Mandy’s number glowed on the screen. “Hey, little mama.” She was the sister nearest to him in age and the one he was closest to. And no matter how adamant she was that he call her by her proper name, for some reason he couldn’t call her Amanda, her full name. So he’d started with the goofy nicknames. This one looked as though it might stick.

“You haven’t seen me lately, soldier boy,” she grumbled. “I’m not that little anymore.”

“And I’m not a soldier, so we’re even.” He laughed with her. “What’s up? You okay?” Seven months pregnant, she was probably miserable. Not that he would know, but he’d heard the guys in the unit complain when their wives were almost due.

He’d missed that experience with Tammie. He wasn’t sure how he felt about that.

“I’m fine. Little one’s impatient these days. Just checking to see what’s going on. We thought you’d be home by now.”

So had he, but he’d had no idea about Tammie’s situation when he’d set out to find her. The silence stretched out over the air.

“Do you really think this is a good idea?” Mandy asked.

How could he explain? No, it wasn’t a good idea. There were too many unknowns—and too much risk—going after an enemy as unpredictable as Dominic Carlyle. But leaving Tammie to deal with him on her own wasn’t even an option. And neither was taking this mess back to his family. “Yeah. I have to.”

Mandy was thinking; he could almost hear her doing so. He waited patiently for her to put her thoughts together into words.

“That wasn’t very convincing,” she finally said.

DJ laughed. “It’s the best I got.”

“You better work on your pitch. Addie won’t give you much more time. If you’re not home for Tyler’s birthday, she’s going to kill you. And maybe the rest of us, too.”

“That bad, huh?” Classic Addie. He laughed. “Wish I could guarantee I’ll be there, but I can’t.” The clerk had finished ringing up his items. “I gotta go. I’ll be in touch. Love ya, sis.”

“Be careful,” she whispered just before ending the call.

DJ knew his family. They might be scattered all over creation, but they talked. Lord, how they talked. Everyone would get his message, probably in the next hour.

Jason’s frequent quip seemed apropos. Telegraph, telephone...tell a sister.

DJ HEARD THE SHOWER running when he opened the motel room door. He swung the new suitcases up on the nearest bed, careful not to strain his back.
