At seven-fifteen Ryan waited in the living room for Victoria. He was dressed and ready to go, with the corsage and boutonniere boxes handy. If this had been their real prom, he would have been sitting here at her parents’ mercy and being scrutinized by them. But he was just as nervous, he realized.

He was thrilled, too, that they were going the distance. There wasn’t a woman in this world he would rather have an affair with than Victoria. He still had mixed feelings about keeping it a secret from Kaley, though. He understood and respected Victoria’s reasoning, but he suspected that it was going to be awkward when Kaley was around and they were trying to behave as if they weren’t being intimate or didn’t have romantic feelings for each other.

But they would cross that bridge when they came to it. Besides, it was only for a week. They wouldn’t have to keep the pretense going forever.

When Victoria entered the room, he jumped up and grabbed the corsage box. She was an absolute vision. The gold dress was a knockout. Everything about her was spectacular. Her hair was straight and smooth, and although she’d pinned it up, little pieces were falling. He assumed she’d done that deliberately. She was also wearing a wildly sexy shade of red lipstick.

“You look like a goddess,” he said.

“Thank you. You look incredibly handsome, too.”

“Thanks.” He’d paired his suit with a white shirt and black tie, keeping it traditional. He opened the clear container and showed her the corsage. It was a white rose, sprinkled with gold glitter and adorned with a gilded ribbon.

“That’s beautiful, Ryan. It’s perfect.”

“Can I slip it on you?”

“Of course.” She extended her wrist.

After it was in place, they gazed at each other, and his heart started beating faster than he would have liked. But he couldn’t seem to make it slow down, so he let it run wild, like everything else they were going to do tonight. “Do you want to put the boutonniere on me?”

She nodded, and he got the flower and handed to her. She pinned it onto his lapel the way a teenager might, fumbling with the effort. She was obviously as nervous as he was.

“This is what we would have done years ago,” he said. “Only your parents would have been taking pictures.”

“Not happily, though.”

“No. They were never happy when I came to pick you up for a date.”

She fussed with the boutonniere. “It’s crooked. I need to redo it.”

She moved closer and started over, and suddenly he could smell the fragrance on her skin.

“You’re wearing the sweet stuff you used to wear.”

“It’s not the same brand.”

“It’s having the same effect.” He wanted to eat her alive.

“I was hoping it would.”

“You hoped right.” Later he was going to lead her to his bed and devour her like the cupcakes they’d made. “We better get going.” Before he lost control and carried her upstairs.

“Your boutonniere isn’t ready yet.” She fussed a bit more and fixed it. “Now we can go.
