CHAPTER SEVEN

Clementine emptied the syringe filled with antibiotic high upon the lamb’s neck, then gently massaged the injection spot before untying the small rope securing its legs.

“There you go, little one. By the end of the day you’re going to feel like kicking up your heels,” she said to animal.

The lamb quickly climbed to his feet, then scurried to join the rest of the flock. She watched until the lamb was reunited with his mother, then rising from her squatted position, she scanned the herd to make sure she’d not missed any other showing signs of respiratory distress.

This past week she’d doctored several of the lambs, who’d come down with what a human would consider the sniffles. So far all had recovered nicely and she hoped the strain was starting to wane. Especially before Quint showed up again. If or when that might be.

Three weeks had passed since the day he’d ridden up and surprised her with his unplanned visit. And since then she’d not been able to think of much else but him.

Damn the man! He’d ruined everything for her. Normally, she’d be enjoying the brisk fall air, the glorious gold color appearing on the aspen leaves and the coats on the sheep growing long and thick in anticipation of winter to come. Yet instead of getting pleasure from nature’s changes, she was constantly thinking about the man and watching for him to ride up again.

Something had happened to her that day he’d arrived at her camp. The moment he climbed off his horse and walked up to her it was like she’d been hypnotized. She’d wanted to walk with him, talk with him and even sit in silence with him. But even more, she’d wanted to touch him, to discover how it would feel if he kissed her, made love to her.

There had been moments during his stay that she’d gotten the impression he was thinking the same things about her. But he’d not reached for her in any way. He’d not implied with words or touches that he wanted her. When he’d ridden away she’d felt frustrated and lonely and very foolish.

Hungering for a young cowboy like Quint was ridiculous, and yet night after night, she’d been tormenting herself with images of him in the arms of a woman ten or twelve years younger than herself. The faceless woman was always wearing soft, feminine clothing with pretty jewelry. Her nails were painted and perfectly shaped, her hair smooth and glossy. No, she thought sadly. Quint wouldn’t be out on the town with a woman like Clementine. He didn’t want a woman like her, period. Not even for a brief affair.

Don’t tell me you’d be willing to have an affair with Quint! Talk about stupid! You’d be asking for an even bigger heartache than what you went through with Marty. Is that what you want? To have your heart torn out and tossed away? Besides, you don’t want to be like the women Quint dates. That’s not you!

Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted as Lash barked, followed by a high-pitched yip from Jimmy.
