CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Ah, that was so sweet,” Jillian teased, as Mackenzie and Bliss went back inside.

Mackenzie looked at the silly grins on her sisters’ faces. “Were you watching?” Dumb question since she already knew the answer.

Faith chuckled. “Of course!”

The three indulged in a sisterly hug.

Faith linked arms with her. “We were going to ask how the marriage is going but after that kiss...”

“Not to mention your pregnancy!” Jillian added, sharing in the joy.

“I don’t think we have to inquire,” Faith said even more sentimentally.

Their erroneous perception sent a wave of guilt flooding through Mackenzie. Her entire family was under the impression she and Griff were madly in love. Instead of just friends and lovers who also happened to be married. And pregnant.

She had never lied to her sisters before, even by omission. It felt wrong to be deliberately misleading them now. But she couldn’t tell them the truth. Not without making them think less of Griff for ever agreeing to her cockeyed idea. This wasn’t something she would ever want their twins to know about, either.

Jillian squinted at her. “What is it?” she asked. “What’s wrong?”

Mackenzie led her sisters into the woefully outdated kitchen for lattes. She confessed what had been bothering her since the previous day. “I just don’t think I’ve been a very good friend—I mean, wife,” she corrected hastily, “to Griff.”

Faith frowned. “Why would you say that?”

Mackenzie gestured at their highly disorganized surroundings. “Look at this place. I wouldn’t let him unpack most of his stuff, because I wanted to take care of the updates first, and I haven’t done a darn thing. I mean, it’s hard to even find a place to sit down.”

“We’ll help you get the place organized while we’re here,” Faith said soothingly. “That is, if you’ll let us.”

“You have a rep for being a tad independent,” Jillian teased.

“Takes one to know one,” Mackenzie teased. Jillian hadn’t let herself lean on anyone since her failed elopement when she was eighteen. In fact, she still hadn’t forgiven cowboy Cooper Maitland for blowing the whistle on her and her fiancé. Thereby allowing Carol and Robert to intervene and end the ill-begotten romance.

“Hey, I’m not criticizing you.” Jillian went into the other room and after a few loud thumps, and crashes, eventually came back with a third chair to pull up to the little café table. Sobering, she announced, “I admire both you-all’s independence. I don’t think any person should rely on anyone else for their happiness, and that goes double for husband and wife.”

Faith made a dissenting face. “Of course, a wife’s happiness is dependent upon her husband!”

“It does not have to be,” Mackenzie countered. And she was not going to let it be. She didn’t want things like money and expectations coming between her and Griff, especially now that they had twin babies to raise. Squaring her shoulders, she put a paint deck onto the table. It held the full rainbow of color possibilities. “Which is why I’m doing this without his input.”

Jillian tilted her head.
