Chapter Seven

She didn’t say yes. She didn’t say anything. Instead she pulled away from him and headed back inside. They stayed for another twenty minutes, and when Bernie’s client showed up they said their goodbyes and Daniel promised to return to see them in a couple of days. Being around his family made her long for her own, and Mary-Jayne stayed quiet on the trip back to the resort.

All you need to do is say yes...

As if it was so easy.

She almost admired his perseverance. Almost. He was relentless when he wanted something. No wonder he was so successful professionally. Solana had told her that he’d pretty much singlehandedly turned the chain of Sandwhisper Resorts into a flourishing enterprise around the globe. When his grandfather had been at the helm, Anderson’s had only recently ventured into the new direction after spending years in copper and ore mining. Most of that was sold off now and the business focused on the resorts. While other empires had failed, Daniel had kept Anderson’s afloat by using natural business acumen and innate tenacity. She remembered how he’d told her how so many people relied on the company for their livelihood and that was what made him determined to keep the organization growing.

Once they got back to the resort, he walked her to her door and lingered for a moment. “Can I see you tonight?”

Mary-Jayne shook her head. “I don’t think so.”

His eyes flashed. “You can’t avoid me. I’m not going away, and neither is this situation.”

“I’m tired, that’s all. It’s been a long day. And eventful,” she said, and waved the envelope that held the picture of their babies.

He nodded. “All right, Mary-Jayne, I’ll back off for tonight. But we have to get this sorted out.”

“Yes,” she said, and sighed heavily. “And we will. Just not today.”

He left her reluctantly, and once he was gone she moved into the living room and slumped into the sofa. She was more confused than ever. Daniel confused her. Confounded her. He was relentless about the marriage thing. But she wouldn’t change her mind. She couldn’t. It would be a complete disaster.

She wanted love...not duty. Maybe he wasn’t quite the closed-off corporate shark she’d first thought him to be; maybe there were moments when she enjoyed his company and liked the way they verbally sparred. And maybe there was a constant undercurrent of attraction and desire between them that made her head spin. But it still wasn’t enough. And it never would be. Attraction alone wasn’t enough. And those few unexpected moments where she relaxed around him were unreliable.

She hung around the condo for the remainder of the afternoon and at five o’clock was about to call Audrey again when there was a knock on her door. She groaned, loathing the thought of going another round with Daniel when all she wanted to do was talk to her friend and then curl into bed.

But it wasn’t Daniel at her door. It was his grandmother.

“Can I come in?” Solana asked.
