Chapter 2

There was no denying how simply drop-dead gorgeous Special Agent Beau Jerrott was. A woman would have to be dead to not be affected by his tousled black hair, those penetrating eyes and that just-French-enough accent he had going.

He caught her first with the magnetic quality of his dark blue eyes, glittering with devilish light. When their eyes met, something tangible sizzled between them.

A grin unfurled, slowly, easily, cutting a pair of dimples into his lean, tanned cheeks. Kinley felt as if someone had just gut-punched her. The smile transformed a face that had only moments ago looked stern and unapproachable. His mouth was wide and mobile, the lips wonderfully masculine and full, accentuated by the faint stubble across his upper lip and around his chin. His thick, dark hair lay across his forehead, the rest tapering down in a medium layer cut that framed his striking face.

First off, she wasn’t going to give in to an attraction that could spell disaster for her professional career. That was her one and only focus. Rising in the ranks to eventually run her own team. She knew how the boys’ club worked. Sleeping with fellow agents regardless of what alphabet-soup agency they belonged to wasn’t smart. She’d discovered that the hard way.

“What else did you find?” he asked as he rose.

“I was just going to search the bridge and gather evidence if you’d like to tag along,” she said, keeping her voice neutral and cool. She grabbed some evidence bags and headed toward the bridge as he followed.

“What other info do you have on Dixon? Where is his family located? You’re going to want to interview them,” Beau said.

“I’m aware of that. I’m not some novice,” she said, turning on him, her words sounding more than a little snappish. She didn’t need him telling her how to run an investigation.

He stopped when she did and shifted his weight. He didn’t say anything and Kinley realized that she was reacting to the previous pressure, the anniversary of her father’s death, and the horrific find she’d literally stumbled on in the fog.

But it was best that he realize he wasn’t dealing with any kind of pushover.

“I wasn’t suggesting you were. Just thinking out loud,” he said, his voice very calm.

Of course he wasn’t suggesting that. What an easy backtrack, but instead of just viewing a strong woman as assertive, bitch was the watchword. She didn’t care.

“His parents live here in Norfolk. My plan was to finish here and go over to their residence and...break the news along with questioning them.” She again kept her voice neutral and cool to counteract the heat the man generated. She entered the bridge and he followed, and the expansive area felt smaller with his presence. He smelled so good, a combination of spicy and male.

“Breaking the news is the worst part of the job,” he said, crowding her enough that she felt the need to back up so he could look around. She was all for a second pair of eyes as long as they were scoping out evidence and not on her.
