Chapter 19

Sweet little bobcat, Lannie thought.

Holly had been fiery and fearless, bounding down the hill with a familiar feline grace and clawing her way up the driver’s body—not so much accomplished as determined, that stumpy tail lashing.

And now she curled up in his arms, never having made it to her feet after finding her human again—not hysterical, not angry, not shaking from the impact of what she’d just been through. Just stunned and being with him, her breath warm on his shoulder, her skin soft against his, her loosed hair flowing like water over his chest and arm.

It worked for him. Though he didn’t know just how much longer he’d remain upright, on his knees or not. Even in the midday heat, his jeans had turned clammy with blood and a cold sweat prickled the hair of his chest; the coppery tang in his mouth came as much from his own injuries as those he’d inflicted. His breath ran hot against his throat and didn’t seem to do much to get him the air he lacked.

But through it all, the music of Holly’s connection ran strong. Not just the notes she’d given him when he’d had nothing else to hang on to, but the fullness of a song—her song—intertwined with the pack.

He wondered if she knew it.

“Oh my God,” she said. “I’m naked.”

His sound of amusement sounded as ragged as he felt, but she lifted her head to pin him with a narrow-eyed look. He nodded at the well house. “Dropped your clothes.”

“Shredded them,” she said, her mouth pursing—no doubt pondering whether to take her cat again. But Lannie...

Lannie found he needed her as human.

“My shirt,” he reminded her.

She eyed the packed dirt between the ATVs and the well house, and rose to cross the distance with her head high, her rolling stride unaffected.

When she returned, she wore his shirt and her shoes, and carried what was left of her clothing. Her rueful expression turned alarmed at the sight of him, and he didn’t have to wonder why. The world pulsed around him with a thrum of warning, and pain raged through his body in hot grinding aches and sharp unexpected spears.

Holly ran the last few steps and got there in time to make his descent to ground a gentle one. “Hey,” she said. “Hey.”

He thought he responded, but wasn’t sure. He thought she held his hand, but couldn’t quite tell. Familiar lips pressed his forehead and cheek and mouth, but he might have dreamed that. Then the hands and the lips and the murmurs of comfort left him to struggle with himself on the side of the mountain, but—

Never alone. Not with the song of her in his mind and soul, carrying him through passing time and the heat of the sun moving across his chest.

“Hey,” she said again, eventually, this time with a hand on his shoulder—and not alone at that. “Hey.”

This time, he might have growled, a lift of lip and barely slitted eyes.

“Do something,” she said, and not to him.
