CHAPTER EIGHT

NATHAN WAS PACING. He hated waiting.

The crew were all standing around watching him. Did they know about last night—or was he just being paranoid? Sometimes this island was just far too small.

Rachel. He hadn’t had a chance to speak to her since last night and he wasn’t quite sure what he wanted to say.

He could still feel the sensation of her lips on his. He could still feel the tremble in his body when she’d run the palm of her hand over his bristled hair. He could still remember the dampness on her cheek…

There was a murmur around him as he saw her approach. His eyes automatically went to the ground. He wanted to have a conversation with Rachel—but not like this. Not when cameras and twenty members of the crew were around them.

He gave a nod to Len, one of the safety instructors for this challenge, and stepped into his harness, pulling on his gloves and fastening his helmet.

Focus. That was what he needed to do right now. The time for conversations was later.

* * *

To say the atmosphere was awkward would be putting it mildly.

Neither of them could look at each other. Rachel hadn’t emerged from her room this morning until she’d heard Nathan get up and use the shower and then the cabin front door banging shut.

When the director had told her that she and Nathan were responsible for checking out the safety of the challenge together this morning she’d thought of a hundred and one excuses.

But this was work. Rachel Johnson had her professional pride. And a stubborn streak a mile wide. Part of her felt responsible. She’d kissed him last night. She’d been the one to set the wheels in motion. Not Nathan.

Trust. The word was burning in her brain, and it had done for most of the night. The look of hurt in his eyes had been gut-churning.

Up here, on the top edge of the cliff, with the sea winds swirling around her, trust was certainly an issue.

‘There is absolutely no way I’m going down there.’

The director sighed. ‘You both have to inspect all challenge sites. You can’t do that from here.’

Nathan still hadn’t made eye contact with her. It was apparent he’d already had this conversation because he was standing with a harness around him, gloves on his hands, receiving special instructions from Len, one of the crew members who would be overseeing their descent.

A boat bobbed on the water at the bottom of the cliff face. It was a long way down.

‘I can do this myself, Rach, if you’d prefer.’

Nathan’s low voice carried on the wind towards her. It sparked fury in her stomach. There was no way she was letting him think she was scared. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction.

She ignored him completely and stalked over to where Len was holding out the harness for her to step into. His safety briefing was thorough. She would be held safely in place; all she had to do was feed the line slowly through the carabiner.
