CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Catriona’s heart nearly stopped. Time slowed. The enemy hunched over Gray and pointed his gun at his chest. His finger hovered over the trigger.

In that moment, she knew she could not watch this man die. Could not lose him.

Snagging a heavy flower vase from the counter, she swung it in a wide arc and connected with the side of his head.

He faltered. Gray shifted upward and struck the man’s chin with his palm. The blow sent him reeling. They grabbed the weapon and ran, luring him and his partner to the exit stairs and away from the shoppers.

Sirens greeted them when they stumbled onto a side street. They ran toward the sound.

Cat looked back and saw the men exit the shopping complex and scan the street. The old white van rolled up, Axel at the wheel, and they got in.

Gray’s arm circled her waist, and he urged her around the corner and out of sight. Red and blue lights flickered over the pedestrian-filled street. Three police cruisers were parked in front of the entrance, and an officer conversing with onlookers noticed their approach. Catriona surrendered the weapon they’d taken from their attacker and quickly explained the situation. She flashed her ID. Learning that she was a military police officer lent her credence in his eyes.

She noticed Gray had gone quiet and was practically weaving on his feet.

“Please, can you take us to the nearest hospital? He’s been shot.”

The officer ushered them into his back seat and radioed command while maneuvering through the crowd. He put out a BOLO on the white van.

“I saw faded letters on the side,” she told him, buckling in. “ATE was all I got.”

He nodded. “Hang in there, Mr. Michaelson. The hospital’s less than a ten-minute ride from here.”

Gray lifted his head from the seat. “I appreciate the ride.” He met her gaze. “It’s fine.”

Cat wasn’t convinced. The blood had spread, and they hadn’t yet had a chance to inspect the wound. Being exposed to the river water wasn’t going to help.

He threaded his fingers through hers. “You’re going to need medical attention, as well.”

She nearly brought his hand to her cheek and nuzzled it. Startled, she extricated herself. “I wasn’t shot at close range.”

Those moments on the boat would go down as some of the most terrifying of her life. She hadn’t anticipated Axel’s desperation. It made her very scared for Bianca.

At the hospital, Cat was released within the hour. Gray’s injury was worse than he’d let on, but deemed superficial. It had carved out a hunk of flesh at his waist that would leave a gnarly scar if he didn’t seek a plastic surgeon’s treatment. He was started on a regimen of antibiotics and given extensive instructions on wound care.

She felt a rush of relief when he emerged wearing a clean set of blue scrubs. Relief and something deeper, something unsettling. How he had become important to her in such a short time was beyond comprehension.

I don’t want to care about him, Lord. I don’t know how to let someone in.
