CHAPTER NINE

Chase shook hands with Angus in the foyer of the big house. “Thank you for staying with Jake yesterday and today. Knowing you were here with him let us do what we had to do with a whole lot less worry.”

“I’m sorry to hear it was pretty rough in Denver and on your way back. I’ll keep my eyes open for trouble and do some asking around. When do you need me back?”

“We’ll let you know.”

Angus twirled his cowboy hat in his hands. “Look, I’m sorry about losing the boy.”

Chase’s lips curled upward. “I’d be more worried had he gotten lost in the forest. He did what he was told and stayed close to you...with a little distraction of kittens.”

His lips firming into a straight line, Angus nodded. “He’s a good kid.”

“Yeah, and his grandmother is the best.” Chase breathed in and let it out slowly. “Neither one of them deserves to be hurt.”

“Yeah, well, I’ll be here whenever you need me.”

“Go home and spend time with your family. It’s nearly Christmas, surely you’ve got holiday plans.”

Angus grinned. “If I don’t, Reggie will have them for me. She’s a one-woman dynamo. I don’t know where she gets all that energy to run a ranch and be a terrific mother to Tad.”

“I hope it wasn’t too much keeping track of Jake.”

“Are you kidding? I caught up on my ball games while the boys entertained each other yesterday afternoon. They spent all day in a tent made of sheets set up in the living room. Tad didn’t want to go home when Reggie came by to pick him up. And your bear probably has a worn spot or two where they petted it at least a hundred times.”

Chase chuckled. “I keep meaning to get rid of that bear. I don’t know why my grandfather thought it was a good idea to keep his trophy bear in the living room. I might donate it to a natural history museum.”

Angus shook his head. “You can’t get rid of it. If nothing else, the kids love it.”

The two men shook hands and Angus left, promising to be on call should they need him any time, day or night. Chase went in search of Kate. By now, she should be ready for a break from Jake. Being with the child was probably torture for her, knowing she’d never have any of her own.

Though Kate had been self-conscious about the scar on her stomach, Chase loved it. The scar was a reminder of who she was. In a way it defined Kate as the self-sacrificing cop she used to be. Tough, but sensitive enough to hold a frightened boy, even though it tore her apart.

Chase found Kate and Jake in the kitchen sitting side by side at the table, eating the fried chicken and mashed potatoes Mrs. Quaid had made for dinner.

William and Frances sat on the other side of the table, smiling at something Jake had said as Chase walked in.

Frances spotted Chase and half rose from her seat.
