Chapter Ten

“Is that a strong enough motive?” Chelsie asked, sitting cross-legged on the chair in the living room. The words from the radio ran through her mind over and over, but they seemed a long way from the events at the small rural community center in Virginia where the lives of nine people had been snuffed out.

Connors and Danvers were supposedly friends. Would Danvers really have convinced Connors to destroy his life—and to kill people—just to get a new job?

Andre and Scott stared back at her from the couch. Andre was still in workout clothes, but he’d barely broken a sweat. Scott wore low-slung jeans and a T-shirt, his hair neatly groomed but his face unshaven. Every time she looked at him, she imagined the feel of his scruffy jaw scratching against her chin, her neck, her chest.

Heat crept up her face as she stared at him, and she cursed her Irish heritage. If she blushed even a tiny bit, it showed on her cheeks like sunburn.

Scott’s mouth curled knowingly, but all he said was, “Money usually is.”

“Does he have any connection to this McCord-Siler bill? It seems like a pretty big stretch that Danvers would convince an old friend to kill a bunch of people he’d never met on the off-chance it would revitalize this bill and then get him hired.”

“When you put it like that—” Andre started.

“Unless there was some reason for him to think the bill needed a poster boy,” Scott interrupted. “Remember the notes from the case agents who talked to Danvers’s wife? She said that after he left the military, she thought they’d be able to make a new start, but he’d basically been trying to do the same job for more money and with fewer rules.”

“Still, he was working in military security before the shooting,” Chelsie said. “And I’m not sure Connors makes a good poster boy.”

“He’s a poster boy for what the bill’s founders always claimed they were trying to prevent,” Andre said. “Exhausted troops overworked because there simply aren’t enough of them. And then they snap. Connors is a pretty good example of what we don’t want.”

“You think the senators could be involved? McCord and Siler?” Chelsie was skeptical. Even though she’d been the first one to buy into Connors’s claim someone had put him up to the shooting, Scott was right about conspiracies. The more people who knew about a plan like this, the more likely it was to blow up on them.

“Probably not,” Andre said. “That’s a huge risk of career-destroying jail time. Both of those guys have been around too long to be that stupid. McCord needs to boost his ratings if he’s going to have any hope of reelection, but this is a stretch.” He shook his head. “But Danvers might have heard the argument somewhere and decided to put it into action himself. I can’t imagine a senator approaching Danvers and pitching a plan like this. But I can imagine someone like Danvers overhearing the idea and making it his own.
