JOHNNY MENTALLY KICKED himself as he got into his truck to head home from Chelsea’s house. He chastised himself for being so weak where Chelsea was concerned.

He’d known the moment he’d opened his eyes that she wanted to make love to him. He’d recognized the hunger in her eyes as he’d seen it a thousand times in their past.

There was no question that in that moment she had stirred a white-hot desire in him. What he should have done was immediately get out of bed and head home.

Instead, he’d given in to his own desire. And it had been just as wonderful, just as magical, as it had always been with her. Maybe someplace in the back of his mind, he’d hoped it wouldn’t be as good as he remembered. But that hadn’t been the case.

Her lips had tasted like they always had, of exciting first love and hot summer caresses. She had tasted of cold snuggly nights and the hope of love forever more.

Holding her in his arms again had been like a dream come true. She’d fit so neatly against him, like she always had. For the past five years he had tried to forget the passion he’d always had for her, but making love to her again had only reminded him of his wild and deep desire for her.

And the minute she had placed his breakfast on the table before him, he’d realized she wanted to get back with him, that she wanted to go back to when they were together and happy. He’d seen it in the shine of her eyes, in the soft smiles that had curved her lips.

He knew he’d hurt her. Despite her brave face, he’d seen the signs on her features. He should take pleasure in that, given how badly she had hurt him in the past, but he didn’t. He was surprised to realize that the very last thing he would ever want to do was hurt Chelsea, no matter what had happened in their past.

He had shared some of the best moments of his life with her. She knew him better than anyone else on this earth knew him. She knew he had an irrational fear of heights and that he dreamed of having a big family.

She knew that he’d wet his pants in the third grade, and instead of telling anyone, he had run out of the classroom and all the way home. He’d hidden in the barn until his father had found him. She knew things he’d never shared with anyone else.

Now he knew how important it was that he stay away from her. Because he had no desire to go back in time and rekindle a relationship with her, the kindest thing he could do for her and for himself was stay out of her life.

He hoped Lane figured out who was after her. He also hoped Lane would figure out who killed his father, but at the moment, the most imminent danger was to Chelsea.
