CHAPTER NINE

Ellie couldn’t fall back asleep after her conversation with Jenna. So many disturbing things had come to light during the course of that call, not the least of which was the possibility that Jenna may have been sitting across the lake the whole time they’d spoken. But why?

Everyone in town knew the fishing cabin had been empty since the owner’s death earlier in the summer. Anyone could have driven out to use the dock for a midnight swim. It made little sense that Jenna and her companion had come all the way from Dallas to go out to the cabin in the middle of the night.

But Ellie couldn’t shake the suspicion that Jenna had been hiding something. Nor could she forget Jenna’s dream revelations that seemed to have merged with her forgotten memories. Those dark images kept Ellie tossing and turning until dawn broke and she finally threw back the covers and got up. She worked around the house and in her office until midmorning when she received a text from Jenna. They agreed on a time and place to meet and then Ellie went back upstairs to shower and dress.

A little while later, she drove into town and found a parking place down the block from the restaurant. Located across the street from the Belle Pointe Inn, the Lantern Grill had been a staple in town for as long as Ellie could remember. The elegant eatery enjoyed a brisk dinner business, especially on weekends, but most people sought out the less expensive and more family-friendly atmosphere of the Corner Diner for lunch. Ellie had suggested the Lantern Grill for that very reason. She and Jenna could sit at a quiet table without being disturbed.

Jenna was already seated at the back of the restaurant by the time Ellie walked in. She looked lovely in a soft blue top that matched her eyes and complemented her blond hair. A stranger seeing her in passing would never have suspected the trauma she’d been through in her lifetime, but Ellie immediately noted the faint shadows beneath the blue eyes and the hollows in her pale cheeks. She’d lost weight since they’d last met.

Another young woman was seated beside her at the table. She was also blond, but with strawberry highlights and eyes more green than blue. Despite the summer heat, she was chicly dressed in black with large gold hoops in her earlobes. As Ellie approached the table, the woman leaned over to whisper something in Jenna’s ear, reminding Ellie of the two silhouettes she’d spotted across the lake the night before.

She paused briefly beside the table to smile down at Jenna. They made no move to embrace. A tacit agreement had kept a formal distance between them for years.

“Hello, Jenna.”

“Ellie! There you are!”

“I hope you haven’t been waiting long.” She slid into the chair directly across from Jenna. “You look lovely as always. What a beautiful top.”

Jenna smoothed a hand across the silky fabric. “Hazel picked it out.”

Ellie’s gaze moved to the stranger.
