Chapter Ten

Grant had finally lain down in bed when the doorbell rang. He stared up at the ceiling in the darkness, sighed, then threw on a T-shirt and went to the door, feeling every step. It had been a very long, frustrating day, and the verbal warning from James—who’d had a call from Kammy about him and Maggie—had capped it off.

He opened the door, already knowing who was standing on the other side, and turned around, telling her, “Come on in.”

“I’m sorry—”

“Stop apologizing,” he told Maggie as he led her to the living room, squinting as he flipped on a light.

He turned around and faced her, discovering that she looked more worn out than he felt.

“I didn’t mean to wake you. I just wanted to apolo—”

“Maggie,” he said. “If you’re going to start every visit to my house with an apology, it’s going to get old fast. You want to come by, then come by because we’re friends, and you want to see me. Come by because we’re—” he paused, then settled on “—more than that, and you just want me.” He grinned to let her know he was at least partly teasing, and finished, “Just don’t say sorry one more time.”

She fiddled with the hem of her blouse, stuck her hands in her pockets, took them out again and crossed them over her chest. “Okay. Sure.” She glanced over his T-shirt and boxers, and added, “I didn’t think you’d be sleeping.”

It was still early evening, but he’d put in so many late nights during that past two weeks, he’d finally crashed.

“Long day,” he said, settling onto the couch and gesturing for her to join him. “You’re here to find out where we are on the case, I assume.” He’d leaned his head against the back of the couch and closed his eyes, so he didn’t know if she nodded or not as he felt her sit down next to him, but he continued, “Jeff Hoffmeier’s name pops up a few times, but it’s sporadic, and it’s not giving us places of residence.”

“What about his family? They’re still in town.”

Slowly, Grant opened his eyes and looked at her. She’d sat closer than he’d realized, and he could see the strain on her face that got worse with each day closer to September 1.

“I thought you were going to stay away from this.” That had been their agreement, after she’d helped them the night before at the office. Kammy had insisted she stay away from Hoffmeier, and she’d agreed. Grant had known she wouldn’t stay away from the investigation entirely, but he’d thought she’d conceded to focus on her safety, and let them run down the lead. Apparently, he’d been wrong.

Before she could reply, he swore. “Maggie, please tell me you didn’t talk to them.”

“I didn’t give my name. I called, claimed to be from the alumni association, asked for contact information for him.”

Grant sat up, suddenly wide-awake and furious. “Are you kidding me? Are you trying to sabotage
