Chapter 5

I get to the hangar around ten. Hannah is staying with Meg until my morning tour is over, then we’ll swap so she can do some maintenance. The entire situation is as frustrating as hell, but I don’t want to take any chances with Tyler. He’s already shown how unstable he can be and it would kill me if something happened to Meg.

‘Hey, Neil.’ I hear a voice call out and turn to see Dana jogging across the parking lot. She’s wearing a pair of tight yoga pants that hug her delicious curves and I smile as I think about how incredible last night was. I shake my head to dislodge the dirty thoughts from my mind as she stops in front of me.

‘Hey, what’s up?’ I lean down to kiss her and she takes a step back. It’s a weird reaction and I wonder if something’s happened. She looks at me and I can tell that there’s a problem.

‘I got a call this morning.’ She takes a breath and crosses her arms defensively in front of her body. ‘My colleague thinks he’s found another Junkers K47 and he wants me to fly to Topeka to take a look.’

‘What?’ I’m genuinely shocked. My dad was convinced that his was the only one in flying condition in the world and if there’s another in the US that’s more than a pile of parts, it would be a huge shock.

‘Yeah. I’ll be leaving in a few hours, but I wanted to see you before I go.’ She stands on her toes and presses her lips against mine. I pull her close, enjoying the feeling of her body as she wraps her arms around me and pushes her tongue into my mouth. A vehicle pulls into the lot and I swear under my breath as she takes a step back.

‘Ok, uh…’ I don’t know what to say. If there is another K47 out there, then the original offer will probably be withdrawn and I’m positive that I don’t want to sell it for less than that. Maybe the decision will be made for me and I can get back to my life, but I realize that also means that Dana will be gone and a sense of dread races through me as my stomach churns anxiously at the thought. ‘Do you need a lift to Fairbanks?’

‘No- I’ll drive. I need to return the car.’ She says as she chews on her lip like she wants to say something but can’t find the words. ‘I’d better go.’ My gaze follows her as she walks away, taking one last look at me before she gets into the SUV and drives down the bumpy road.

My mind is racing and as I take off for the tour, I realize that I’m dangerously distracted. I try to push the whole thing out of my mind and force myself back into my work as I give the passengers what they paid for. When we land, I see them off and head back into the office to fill out some paperwork.
