Chapter Nineteen
Annabelle didnât know how long sheâd been asleep when she felt something warm and wet touch her cheek. Her eyes flew open. She jerked back, a laugh escaping her lips as Dawsonâs puppy gave her another kiss.
âSadie, no,â he cried as he rushed into the room. âShe has been wanting to come see you for hours. I thought Iâd closed the door all the way after I checked on you earlier. How are you?â
âGood, thanks to you.â
âWell, when youâre ready, I made you something special for breakfast.â With that, he called the puppy, who scampered out and the door closed.
Annabelle looked around for her clothes and groaned when she realized that last night sheâd thrown on one of her grandmotherâs sweatshirts and her jeans. She pulled on the sweatshirt, thinking about her grandmother. Was she really like Frannie? Her grandmother had been a survivor. Annabelle guessed she could say that about herself too.
âSomething smells good,â she said as she walked into Dawsonâs kitchen.
âI thought you might be hungry. You slept a long time. Itâs almost noon.â
She couldnât believe it. Then again, last night she remembered his arm around her all the way out to his house. Heâd helped her inside and into the bed. She remembered trying to thank him, but heâd already closed the door. The next thing she knew, she was waking to Sadieâs kisses.
âYou saved my life last night,â she said, her voice breaking. âIf you hadnât come back to look in on me...â
âFor once my instincts were right,â he said and turned back to dishing up the Mexican quiche heâd made.
The smell of it brought back other memories of the two of them. Dawson had always been a great cook. There wasnât anything the man couldnât do.
âYour instincts werenât wrong thirteen years ago,â she said as he put a slice in front of her along with a bowl of fresh fruit. âI wanted so badly to marry you. The ring, the roses...â Her voice broke again. âBut I couldnât.â
He nodded, his brown eyes serious. âI know. There were things you had to do. I was incredibly selfish asking you to give up your dream.â
âIâm not going back to modeling. I know you said youâre seeing Amy now, butââ
âAnnie, you canât make a decision like that so soon after everything thatâs happened.â
âIâm not going to change my mind. Also, Iâm going to give Amy Baker a run for her money. I want you back, Dawson.â
He shook his head. âAnnie.â
âMy life was so up in the air the night we made love. But Iâm perfectly clear on what I want now. I love you. Iâll wait for you. Iâll talk to Mary Sue about keeping the house and I think I can get a job down at the grocery store. If not there, thenââ
He reached across the breakfast bar and took her face in his big hands. Bending, he kissed her. She forgot all about the quiche. All about everything except being in this manâs arms again.
