Later that evening, I was in the bathroom getting ready for bed. The next voice I heard was Cassie’s through the bathroom door.

“You’ve been in there long enough,” Cassie said. “I need to get in there.”

She was really irritating me. “I’ll be out when I get out, okay?”

“I’m telling!” she yelled.

As Cassie left to go tell on me, I noticed a discoloration on my underwear. It looked brown. Is this it? What I’ve been waiting for? Mom’s not even here.

Well, I knew that my grandma would probably come fussing at me for taking so long in the bathroom, but it was okay because I needed to talk to her anyway about my situation. My head had begun hurting, and I just wanted to lie down.

Somebody knocked on the door.

“Grandma?”

“Naw, it’s me,” Clay said. “What’s takin’ you so long? You’ve been in there forever.”

I shouted, “Use the bathroom downstairs, Clay, or use Mom and Dad’s. I need some privacy!”

“Okay, chill out,” he said as I heard footsteps leaving.

“Carmen, you almost finished in there?” my grandma asked.

“Yes, ma’am.” I slowly opened the door.

“Grandma, I need to talk to you.”

“What is it, baby? Talk to me.”

“I think my cycle is starting,” I said, showing her the spot on my underwear. “And I have a headache.”

“Well, your mama told me that you and her had just talked about this, and it looks like this is it. Sometimes it starts off brown in color, and sometimes later it’ll show up red. I’m just glad you were here at home with me and not at school, baby. You know what I mean? Come here and give your grandma some suga’. It’s your period!”

She squeezed me really tight. I was stunned. But it made sense. I remembered that Mom told me that it could start off brown! In health class, I learned the same thing.

“Mom keeps pads under this cabinet,” I said, reaching for the package.

“You take a nice hot bath, and I’ll bring your pajamas and make you some chamomile tea. If you don’t feel any better after your bath, drinking tea, and lying down, then I’ll get you some medicine.

“Now this is how you put the pad on: take the strip off the back, place the pad in your underwear, and pull ’em up tight.”

“Grandma, I’m so glad you’re here.”

She wrapped her arms around me and I felt safe. “Honey, I’m glad I’m here too. My little Carmen is growin’ up.”

“Grandma, it’s hard to believe that I started my period.”

“Yeah, sweet pea, I know. And it was in the good Lord’s timin’. Your mama told me how you near worried her to death about it. But, child, we never wanna rush God. He knows what’s best for us. Not just for children but us ol’ folks too.”

After I bathed and drank tea, my grandma tucked me into bed nice and tight. She told me I needed to start charting when my cycle started on a calendar, so I would have a better idea of when it could possibly come again.
