The tobacco crackles and blazes as the yellow flame tickles the tip of the cigarette. Amanda Chan breathes in deeply, gazes out of the window, then sips from her coffee cup. Her brow creases.

‘Why would a random detective turn up here to ask about Sebastian Thorne? They must have better things to do.’ She lazily mulls over the question without finding an adequate answer. Her eyes drift onto the unopened mail. Flicking through the letters, she discards the top three, knowing they contain utility bills, overdue utility bills. The last envelope is larger. Her name and address are neatly typed. Intrigued, she peels back the adhesive fold and slips her fingers inside. Now she is puzzled. It’s an old photograph of a bunch of kids and a few men. They are lined up in front of a stone barn. To the left is a wooden sign which reads;

Happy Camp

Discipline. Godliness. Fun.

She peers into the envelope, but it contains nothing else. She flips the picture over and stares at the typed label affixed on the back.

Tom Maplin. Died August 1985.

Her eyes scrunch in bewilderment as she studies the image once more and draws on her cigarette, drinks from her cup.

‘What am I supposed to do with this? Who sent it, and why?’

Carefully, she studies each of the individuals, but the faces mean nothing to her. She walks to her office and retrieves a magnifying glass from the desk drawer, and returns to the table. The magnification does nothing to enlighten her. She wanders around the room puffing on her smoke.

A buzz of adrenaline releases into her bloodstream.

She moves the magnifying glass back and forth until it’s focused on the figure kneeling at the front. Early twenties, wearing shades, handsome.

‘Sebastian bloody Thorne,’ she murmurs in disbelief. ‘Now, what is all this about?’
