She had finally done it. Ela had listed their brand-new-never-been-used-before crib online. Starting back to work had derailed some of her cleaning and organizing goals, but she knew it was time. She needed a fresh start. She deserved a fresh start after everything she’d been through, and the crib had to go. She had expected it would sell fast. Considering it was brand new, she felt like she was almost giving it away for how cheap she’d listed it. But so far, nothing. She tried not to panic, she tried to remain hopeful. It was annoying how little things like this, not being able to sell a crib, could make her completely spiral. She knew exactly where her mind would go if she didn’t get a few potential buyers soon. She’d feel stuck again. Stuck in life and stuck with this useless crib she should have made James move. No one would buy it and it would sit in her house, mocking her.

Ela opened her laptop, which was generally what she did when she felt the deep sadness starting to suck at her lungs. Distraction was always good. She had started checking this message board recently and had kind of become a regular commenter, which was so unlike her. She usually preferred to lurk rather than leave comments. It had started when James told her she had a Medea complex. It was during one of their very last fights, as he was moving out. Ela had no idea what he was talking about, but she didn’t admit it to him at the time. After he’d left she looked it up.

It turned out Medea was Greek mythology. The character Medea kills her two sons as an act of revenge on her husband who leaves her for another woman. She didn’t know if James really thought she had miscarried on purpose because she didn’t want to be married to him. Honestly, she had no idea what he meant, but of course he made the miscarriage about him. And it was such a cruel thing to say. While Ela had been searching online to learn what a Medea complex was, she had stumbled upon this message board. There was a whole thread mocking the myth, pointing out how it was so obviously written by a man who needed to be the center of everything, which had made Ela laugh. Some commenters pointed out that maybe Medea didn’t want to be a mother anymore. And also, why had the two children been left to Medea to care for after her husband trotted off to shack up with someone new?

The message board was a mixture of dark humor coupled with people being honest about not wanting children or even questioning whether anyone should have kids. She learned Medea was considered one of the first references to neonaticide, which she then had to look up too. And now her search history included things like ‘baby hatch’ and ‘antinatalism.’

Finally she closed her laptop.
