flat folder. Lay the folded signature on the cutting section of the bench, with the head away from you, and trim the fore-edge as follows: line up the square with the top edges of the signature, and trim off the ‘““V” formed by the edges of the signature paper [FIG. 112]. Use a sharp knife held firmly against the edge of the square. Make several light cuts. After trimming, clip a wooden clothespin over the back half of the signature to hold the alignment, and lay the finished signature aside [Fic. 113]. Next, cut the covers from a single sheet of medium weight cover paper. Allow a square of Ye inch along the top edge and the foot. Allow for a 22-inch flap to fold over the front end sheet, and a similar flap for the back. On the right side of the cover paper lay out a cutting diagram, using the square and light pencil marks. Cut out the cover. Then turn the work over, wrong-side-up, and make a double score where the cover folds along the backbone. This is to accommodate the thickness of the signature. Score with the folding needle, then fold the cover along these two lines. Do not fold up the flaps; they will be folded after the sewing is finished. Collate the book; lay the folded signature inside the foldec covers, adjusting it so the square is uniform at the head and foot. Now, clip another clothespin over both the signature and the cover, placing it at the top edge of the back half of the book. This will hold the work in correct alignment for sewing [FiG. 114]. Marking up may be done with the work lying flat on the bench, but the use of the punch board simplifies this step on a book of this kind (see Punch Board, p. 89). Pick up the signature and covers, with the clothespin attached, and place them over the punch board, half the signature on either side of the board [F1G. 115]. Make a pencil mark at the center of the signature, and one mark two inches down from the head; make a third mark two inches up from the foot. With a small awl punch the three holes. Leave the clothespin on the work to hold the alignment [Fic. 116]. Wax a length of thread, then tie a knot in one end leaving a four-inch tail. Thread this on a needle. Remove the work from the punch board and lay it flat on the platform of the sewing frame with the foot toward you. Open the book at the center, and keep it open with the right hand laid inside. The signature and covers are sewn together in the same operation. Start sewing at the center hole, passing the needle from the inside to the outside [FIG. 117]. Draw the thread up against the knot. Now, push the needle in at the top hole, and draw the thread through until it is snug [Fic. 118].
