Chapter Twenty-Two
Angel
The Church doors close behind Hammer and I release a sigh.
âCome on,â Duchess claps behind me, âquit staring at those damn doors and talk to me. I need to know.â
I turn and give her a lazy smile. âKnow what?â
Duchess squeals, âYouâre an Old Lady for real! How do you feel? Howâd it happen? Spill!â
I explain how Hammer basically ambushed me with the news of being his Old Lady. How, according to him, I had no choice in the matter, but also that I really didnât care. I wasnât going to fight him on this. Being officially his was a long time coming, at least from my point of view.
âWhy the name âAngelâ?â
âThat should be totally obvious.â I laugh. âItâs because Iâm perfect.â
Duchess playfully punches me in the arm. âQuit being a jokester and tell me the truth.â
I smile, remembering what he said to me. âHe said it was because Iâm his angel. I saved him from being alone.â
âAwww,â she swoons. âHe does have a romantic side under all those muscles and broody stares.â
âHe does.â I smile.
Duchess loops her arm through mine and we head out back. âDid you get lucky last night?â
âOf course, I did.â
That sends us into a fit of giggles. We sit at one of the picnic tables under the back porchâs overhang and take in the quietness. There are a few other people up and around, but no one else is back here.
âHow crazy is this, that we both ended up here? Who wouldâve thought?â I rest my elbows on the table.
âNot me, thatâs for sure. I had zero intentions of ever coming here.â Duchess rubs her belly. âBut look at me now.â
âI think I had a stroke when I got out of that cruiser and saw you standing there. You being here never even crossed my mind.â
âCan I ask a kinda serious question?â Duchess looks a little sad, so I reach for her hands.
âOf course.â
âWhy did you move here and decide to be a club girl?â
Definitely not what I was expecting sheâd ask but still an understandable question. Sheâs asked a few times since Iâve been back, but I kept brushing it off.
âOur parents dying was my fault,â I whisper, looking down.
âNo!â Duchess pulls on my hands, so I look up. âThat wasnât your fault. It was a freak thing.â
âIt was my fault. I was the one who wanted a sleepover with Lacey. Had we not been away from home, we couldâve saved them.â I pull my hands away and stand up. âMom and Dad are dead because of me.â
âThatâs bullshit and you know it,â Duchess shouts. âIf we wouldâve been home, we probably wouldâve died too. Shitty thing about carbon monoxide, itâs undetectable without an alarm. Thereâs no way any of us wouldâve woken up.â
âIt doesnât matter. One of us couldâve woken up for one reason or another and checked on them. I couldâve seen they werenât waking up and called for help. I couldâveââ
âNo, Tempy.â Duchess somehow manages to get to her feet in a flash, âWeâd be dead too.
