Chapter 6

Everyone was just where she wanted them to be. For the first time in her life, she felt fully in charge of what was going on. A limo had picked her mother up some five minutes ago, and they were going to bring her here to one of the larger offices Hamish owned.

Hamish had been such a wonderful help since she’d realized she could end this without bloodshed. Or she hoped so. Her mother was in for a reckoning, and she was going to have a front-row seat to the entire thing.

Lander looked around the room. “I want to thank you all for coming here with me. I think—at least I’m hoping—that this will end this with her once and for all. She’ll go to prison, I’ll have the most wonderful family around me, and things will be normal.” Hamish told her they all loved her. “And I love you guys too. Having a mate, sister, and a grandda is about all I could have ever hoped for in my life. Thank you.”

Her mother came into the room with them. She’d been escorted by a plainclothes officer from the station house in the town where her mother lived. And since they all hoped she’d be taken away in cuffs after this, the other officers and agents from the FBI were here doing a favor for her to make sure things were done correctly. While this was going on with her, they were watching the proceedings from the other room and recording it all. The cameras had been set up in this room for just this purpose.

“What is the meaning of this, Aulander? This isn’t what I requested when I said I wanted to talk to you.” Lander told her mother to sit down and shut up. “I will not be spoken to that way. You and I have some things to work out, and there is no reason for all these people to be here while we’re doing so. I’ve made up a list.”

“Fuck your list. I have my own list of things you and I are going to go over.” Her mother started tapping her foot, something Lander had come to hate as a child. Slamming her fist down on the table, she stood up. “Sit the fuck down right now, and shut your mouth.”

She was as surprised as she’d ever been when her mother did just what she told her to do. Not only did her mother sit down, but she looked about as confused as she was shocked. Acting as if ordering people about was an everyday thing, Lander pulled out her own list.

“Now, this is what you’re going to do. Answer my questions truthfully and without drama, if you can do that. This is a list of wrongdoings—that’s what the police are calling them, wrongdoings. However, the other agents here are calling them a lot harsher things. Like embezzlement. Nonpayment of child support. Gambling in illegal places. That would include the cockfighting—in the event you didn’t know, it’s illegal in all fifty states.
