Jacob Can’t Fly

“What are you doing on Halloween Eve?” asked Pete, the eldest bat in the colony.

“I’m not going to do anything,” said Jacob, the bat who couldn’t fly.

“Why not?” asked Pete.

“I can’t fly,” said Jacob.

“Oh yes,” said Pete. “I remember that now. A bat that can’t fly. That is not a good thing.”

“Really,” said Jacob. “Imagine that.”

“What makes you not fly?” asked Pete. “Have you ever tried?”

“To tell you the truth,” said Jacob. “Nobody ever taught me how.”

Pete shook his head. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard.

“What do you mean nobody taught you how?” asked Pete. “Where is your mother? Why didn’t she teach you?”

“My mother was very ill when I was born,” said Jacob. “She was too busy focusing on getting herself well again for the better part of my childhood.”

“Oh dear,” said Pete. “Yes, I remember that. Well, I can teach you to fly.”

“You can!” exclaimed Jacob.

“Yes,” said Pete. “You meet me at the mountain cliff in about an hour.”

Jacob was so excited. He was finally going to learn how to fly. He was at the mountain cliff precisely when Pete told him to be there.

“Welcome Jacob,” said Pete. “So I understand you can’t fly. Is that right?”

“What is going on?” asked Jacob, his heart sinking when he saw the rest of the bats in their colony all flying around him, laughing and pointing their finger at him.

Jacob couldn’t believe that Pete had betrayed him. He was so angry that he made a jump off the mountain cliff and before he knew it, he was soaring through the air. He spread out his wings and found that he could use them to steer with.

“I’m flying!” exclaimed Jacob.

“You sure are!” exclaimed Pete.

Jacob just realized that Pete did indeed help him. By bringing the other bats to laugh and point fingers at him, it made him so angry that he jumped off the cliff and started flying.

“Thank you,” said Jacob to Pete after all the other bats had left.

“You know,” said Pete. “I actually didn’t do anything. You did it all.”
