Chapter Four

I’m not even surprised to see the carousel. There are few people in the line to ride it, which isn’t a shock either. The zoo is pretty dead today. I’m not sure if it’s the cold weather, the holiday, or a mix of the two, but it’s made for tons of animal pictures without random tourists in the shots. I’ve been much less concerned about the PDA as well. Here, I don’t give a fuck who sees us together. I don’t know anyone in Sierra Springs.

“There’s a polar bear on it,” Micah says, grabbing my arm and pulling me faster toward the giant spinning machine. “I’ll fight a kid for it if I have to.”

Hey, airplanes in the sky? I pray on every last one of you that no small children are injured by my boyfriend on his quest to ride the polar bear.

I’m able to find cash in my wallet quicker than Micah finds his, so I pay the fare and push him through the gate. I do my best not to look at the badass tiger because I know I’ll be stuck riding whatever is next to the polar bear. I just hope it’s not some giant pink flamingo.

“Sweet victory,” Micah says, hugging the golden pole protruding from the polar bear’s back.

I look next to it. No pink flamingo… but also not a badass tiger. It’s a gorilla. I sigh but I’ll deal with it. I can ride a carousel gorilla if it’ll make Micah happy. I accept my fate and throw a leg over, but Micah doesn’t get on the bear. Instead, he examines the side of it.

“Trying to create some crazy date out of that thing?” I ask, hoping he doesn’t take offense.

He just shakes his head but continues to stare. “Who adopted yours?” he asks.

“What?” I counter, unsure of what he’s talking about.

“There’s a golden plaque on the side,” he says, nodding to the side of the bear that I can’t see from here. “Mine says ‘The Calvert Family’ and under it, it says, ‘Dr. Mike, Rachel, and Jude.’ Like they adopted it or sponsored it or something,” he explains.

I glance over at the carousel attendant, who is still taking money at the gate. I readjust so I can see the plaque on the side of the gorilla.

“Are you sure they don’t just own the carousel?” I ask. “I have the Calvert family too – Dr. Mike, Rachel, and Jude.”

Micah shrugs and climbs atop the polar bear. Then he pulls out his phone, holds it out as far as his arm will stretch, and tells me to lean in.

And I do.
