I took a deep, shaky breath and tucked the comm deeper into my pocket. It was time to face Garrus and get this over with. Yet, inside, I felt empty. My father and I had finally grown closer through all of this—now he was gone. Fresh tears burned the back of my eyes.

“There she is,” Uncle Seim said in a relieved voice.

Garrus spun, his eyes narrowed briefly before he schooled his features. “I wish we were meeting under different circumstances.”

I nodded, not trusting my voice. I kept my arms locked at my sides. I didn’t want to give Garrus any opportunity to touch me or try and offer comfort. Truth was, I wanted Damien and Jax and Titus. Their presence and companionship. I’d been spending so much time with them that they felt familiar, comforting.

Garrus straightened. ″At last, now we can prepare both ceremonies.”

I pursed my lips, what the hell was that supposed to mean?

“Your father’s last wish was for our marriage." ‏His gaze shifted, pausing on my chest before sliding down my body and finally back up to my face. “We’ll have the funeral tomorrow and our wedding a week later.”

I felt a familiar fatigue, numbness to most of my body and an underlying rage building. I couldn't imagine being Garrus’ wife or anything else. I’d rather die than let him touch me.

“My father lays dead and you want to arrange our marriage, now?” I clenched my teeth, wanting to say so much more. But I had to be careful. Diplomacy said I should be grateful that he wasn’t whisking me off this moment to marry me.

My father’s mission was to promote peace and thus freedom for all species. That was what my father meant when he said that every life was precious. That all people were worth protecting and honoring.

Garrus growled, not bothering to hide his annoyance.

“She’s right,” a male voice said behind me.

Damien sauntered up to us, and I gaped at him. What was he doing here? Not that I minded, but I had to keep the relief I felt at seeing him and wanting to run into his arms out of my expression. If Garrus suspected for one moment that I cared about Damien or his friends more than I did the Vrils leader himself, my betrothed, he’d kill them. So I kept my face as neutral as possible.

“Serena just lost her father,” Damien said, reaching my side. “The laws state that any civil rite, even though previously agreed upon, must be postponed for thirty days after a bereavement such as this tragedy.”

“I know the law,” Garrus snapped, his eyes narrowing with fury. “But I would console and counsel her and I can’t do that if she’s locked away at that damn school.”

Yeah, right. He just wanted to breed me like all his other wives. I stifled a shiver.

“That’s not up to you.” Damien took a step toward Garrus. “She deserves the right to see about her father’s remains and grieve. Something that perhaps should be added to Vrils’ ruled planets as well.
