She Burns the Motel

* * *

Utah, 1975

I’ve lived in thrust and throttle,

the kick, the scald, the brand;

my face embraced his bottle,

my mouth has tasted sand.

He only gave me smoulder,

the smoke of hopes grown older,

cigar burns on my shoulder,

and matches in my hand.

I know his grip that bound me,

his breath inside my ear.

The empty road consumes me,

red wind and welts appear.

I leave the bedside crawling;

my instinct says I’m stalling

but, though my God is calling,

I cannot find Him here.

The bills and lawns and houses,

the power mowers and guns,

the boats and Sunday blouses,

grey groups of girls and sons;

there are words the others won’t utter,

they gorge on beer and butter

and, while they hide and sputter,

the lost one burns and runs.

Loose in a satin teddy,

ripe on his lips she lies.

Her arms will hold him steady;

her green, unsteady eyes

have seen things that remind her

that life has not refined her.

She’ll feel the heat behind her

and rise in stupid surprise.

I’ll burn the bitches like money.

They’re too far gone to mind,

though her gold hair melts like honey

and the sheet smoke makes them blind

and the timbers crack like dishes.

I’ll feel them on my lashes

and bathe in their treacherous ashes,

sweet cells that dance on the wind.

The piss of sparks will mellow.

I will earn what I require

and I’ll turn this crap town yellow

and I’ll make myself the star.

I was born for the heat to have me;

it’s the only thing left that can love me.

Look at my hands above me

and bring me the siren’s fire.
