Dilation of the Eyes to See Light
Find a white wall in a softly lit room. Sit in a chair and place your hand on a clear patch of wall. Now, stare at your hand and relax your gaze, dilating your eyes, going into your peripheral vision. It may help to imagine that you’re looking through your hand. You may notice that you begin to see a ring of white light around your hand. Continue to practice and you may see other shades surrounding that white light.
When I was a kid I used to practice this quite a bit. I’d sit in the back of class at school and listen to the teacher lecture while I dilated my eyes and looked at everyone’s aura. Every now and then I’d get into it enough that I’d glimpse huge spikes coming off of people’s heads. Yeah… it was an interesting childhood.
This exercise can be practiced to see auras, or in order to see your own internal light. It’s the same subtle kind of light; a light that is usually overshadowed by the more gross light of the sun. Just use this experience and transfer it to your internal practice. Remember how I said that you need to gaze through the spiritual eye, using your peripheral vision? It’s the same thing. It’s all just light, and you need to dilate your eyes in order to see the finer, more subtle spiritual light.
I had an aunt and uncle who practiced photography and who had set-up their own dark room. After years of practice, staring at film in the half dark, they admitted that they’d developed the ability to see the subtle light of auras. Because they were dilating their eyes. It’s all the same.
The scientists in the crowd will point out that what we’re seeing is just an afterimage produced by staring at the hand, which is also true. This works for our purposes though, because you still have to dilate your eyes in order to see an afterimage. And if you are capable of seeing light around your hand, then you are capable of seeing light in your spine. End of story.
So, they let me into the Postulant Ashram, which is a kind of boot camp for monastics, and I spent another two years gardening for Self-Realization Fellowship. It had its own politics and problems, of course, but all in all it was a great experience. Sometimes I’d be thirty feet up in a tree, pruning near the cliffs in Encinitas. Every once in a while I’d lift myself above the canopy to watch the horizon – filled up with the Pacific Ocean. Living in Idaho, I’d made the woods my refuge. In California, it was the ocean.
I had started to see the light and hear the sound on a more consistent basis. Taken with it, I was using all my breaks to hide in the storage shed, or go back to my room for a quick meditation. One time in particular, while using
