a Norse, bronze, ring-headed pin

and one Dorset arrowhead

embedded in the western wall.

No burials. No rune sticks.

Everything worth its weight — their dead

and their language — left with them

in the strake sling of a knarr ship.

Everything else

they could live without.

TRANSLATION . . .

As it happens, I’m not myself today,

so decide to dress the part.

And after a meantime waylaid

on the corner of Water and, well, Water,

I leap across the jamb

(beneath a portal arch

renovated to serve a bigger man)

of a café / bar-cum-coat-store.
