The first Model 870 “deer gun” was the RSS, Rifle Slug Special, introduced in 1959. What made it deer spacial? The addition of rifle sights to a 26-inch barrel—that was it. my oh my how things have changed.

The first major change to deer variants of the Model 870 occurred in 1986, when Remington announced the new Model 870 SP Special Purpose Deer Gun. This model had a dull, non-reflective finish on the metal and a satin finish on the wood. The short, 20-inch barrel had rifle sights, as well as the new Rem Choke system, and the gun had sling swivels and came with a padded camouflaged sling. From this point on, the Model 870 Deer Gun continued to evolve into the several versions that one finds today in Remington’s catalog and on retailer’s shelves. The cantilever scope mount version first appeared in 1991, and from then on, all different sorts of models began to appear with synthetic stocks and various camouflage finishes, as well as fiber optic sights.

The production and debut of more accurate ammunition and the utilization of rifling in shotgun slug gun barrels had a profound effect on shotgun deer guns. No longer was the slug gun a short-distance gun with questionable accuracy, a reputation attached to many of yesteryear’s slug guns. The slug gun had now become a viable deer gun, as good as some of the older rifle calibers! With a good sighting system or a scope, the slug gun now is a 100-plus-yard deer gun!

One of the side effects of the development of better rifle slug ammunition and the rifling in shotgun barrels, which increased the range and accuracy of slug guns dramatically, was the creation of a slug gun that was lighter and easier to handle than the old standby, the 12-gauge. The 20-gauge rifle slug gun has now become a very effective deer slayer, something that was simply not possible a few decades ago. Today’s 20-gauge slug gun can put all its slugs in a pie plate-size area at 150 yards, still with enough energy to knock down any deer. Remington was not about to miss the bus on this new phenomena and was one of the first to put out a Model 870 Deer Gun in 20-gauge, one with a rifled barrel that was light and easy to carry, yet had the accuracy and power to kill deer at extended ranges.
