Laura marched into the Altrincham shop with her head held high; she was determined not to show any sign of weakness. She locked eyes with Caitlin who was working on the till. Caitlinâs jaw tightened and her nostrils flared as she flashed a glance towards her, then quickly gazed back at the customer she was serving.
Breezing past the shop counter, Laura ordered, âOffice, NOW!â then carried on walking.
Staff and customers looked at her with their mouths agape as she strode past them. Once Laura reached the office, Caitlin typically kept her waiting. But Laura wasnât worried. She would make sure she gained the upper hand.
She glanced at Caitlinâs handbag on the floor beside the desk and, acting on impulse, reached inside it, grabbing Caitlinâs phone, and secreting it inside her own handbag. Laura had just placed Caitlinâs bag back on the floor when she sauntered inside the office, appearing relaxed with a smirk on her face. But Laura had spotted her reaction when sheâd entered the shop and knew it was a front. How she was looking forward to wiping away that fake smile!
âWeâre busy out there, yâknow!â she complained.
Laura forced herself not to rise to it and to focus instead on what she was here for. âShut the door and sit down.â
Caitlin did as she was told, her smirk now replaced by a puzzled frown.
âRight,â began Laura. âNow Iâve got your attention, I want you to tell me why you saw fit to sell a story to the press about the attacks on my businesses and certain aspects of my past.â
Caitlin frowned as if in shock. âWhat are you talking about?â
âYou know what Iâm talking about, Caitlin, so donât play games. You reported the attack on Haley to the press and the vandalism to this shop and the Deansgate one.â
âAttacks on Deansgate? I didnât even know about any attacks at Deansgate!â
Although Caitlin denied Lauraâs accusations, her face blanched and Laura knew she had her.
Trying to switch emphasis, Caitlin went into attack mode. âWhy werenât we told about these attacks? You should be warning the staff if theyâre in danger.â
Laura ignored her questions. âGina at Deansgate has confirmed that you went to see her. While you were there, you told her what had happened at this shop and managed to find out about the damage there too.â
Caitlin seemed to realise that denial was now futile. âSo what?!â she snarled. âYou canât blame me for that. Like I said, we should have been informed, then I wouldnât have had to find out from Gina. Haleyâs already been attacked. The staff should be on their guard. And anyway, it doesnât mean I reported it to the press. And I donât know anything about your past. You kept that a secret, didnât you?â
Laura noticed the sly smirk on her face again and she tried to contain her temper. There was no way she was going to answer to this slimy little bitch for her past mistakes. Caitlin was the one in the firing
