Lieutenant General (Obergruppenführer in the General SS) Josef “Sepp” Dietrich wearing 1933-34 style eagle and swastika cap emblem and black General SS uniform. He had an exciting, varied career, from private in the Great War to army commander in the Second, from butcher to bodyguard, from cavalryman to political soldier, from party thug to accused war criminal, from husband and father to jailbird. 1914

Unfortunately, no good photographs of Sepp’s service before or during the First World War have been found. According to his biographer, Charles Messenger, “He himself for many years liked to have it believed that he joined the 1st Bavarian Uhlan Regiment ... In fact, he joined the 4th Field Artillery Regiment ‘Konig’ at Augsburg in 1911.” In this wartime photo, German lancers stand guard over French peasants, probably suspected of being “Franc Tireurs,” the First World War equivalent of today’s terrorists or partisan fighters.
