Nora

A limo drives us to the palace. The palace itself is made of an off-white stone, but the roof is tiled in a deep, burnt orange. It has two large towers on the front, and several domed rooftops over the main chamber. It looks almost like a church, but there’s no stained glass, and there’s a more modern white and angular building attached to the stone, church-like part of the palace. The white building has an infinity pool on the rooftop, and many other modern luxuries like wrap-around balconies and big glass doors that open the living spaces out to join with the outdoor space.

The whole palace is on a hill overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It’s amazing and beautiful...but all I’m thinking about is where the dungeon is.

Prince Ahmed takes us inside and gives us a tour. The larger stone building really does feel kind of like a church, but it’s set up more like a museum to the throne that they lost than a functioning palace. There are framed paintings of members of the deposed royal family, and there are a lot of glass display cases with things like decrees written by past kings and queens, or other little keepsakes that Ahmed goes through one at a time, giving us very long and detailed history lessons.

Each time I’m tempted to yawn, I simply think about the dungeon and clench my teeth as hard as I can. I’d hate for yawning during a boring story to get Riggs and me both sent to the dungeon. Oh, but don’t worry, it would only be some light torture. Like sleep deprivation. Or water torture.

Did she mean the Chinese style water torture? Or did she mean waterboarding? Or maybe there’s a third type of water torture the Egyptians use?

Either way, I do not want to find out. So no yawning, no matter how long this tour drags on for.

It takes almost two hours until we’re brought into the more modern living quarters. Prince Ahmed thankfully lets us go almost straight to our room, which has a big double-door which opens up and connects our room to a generous patio space overlooking the sea.

When he’s finally gone, I grab Riggs by the arm and look him dead in the eyes. “The dungeon? Are you fucking serious?”

Riggs, looking much calmer than me, gestures with his head for me to follow him. He opens the double glass doors and takes me out to the balcony. We both sit down facing the sea. The sun is warm on the blue sky, but a cool breeze from the sea makes it all feel just right.

“We have to get out of here, Riggs,” I whisper to him.

“He’s only going to torture people who challenge his throne, Nora, not people who…”

“People who trick and betray him?”

“We just need to be convincing then, don’t we?”

“You owe me like five times more than you did before there was a dungeon.”

“Fine,” Riggs says. “Now come here.”

I look down. Our chairs are already pressed right up against each other.
