LUCID DREAMS

Lucid dreaming occurs when you know you are dreaming while you are still dreaming. Lucid dreaming was first termed such in 1913, and since the 1960s (the era of LSD, Carlos Castaneda, etc.) has attracted a lot of interest. This phenomenon has been observed for a long time, and even Aristotle made reference to it.

There are various techniques to encourage dreaming with lucidity, based on the idea that you can shape reality by conscious dreaming and therefore make positive, willed changes in your life. I have misgivings about this approach, and I recommend you follow your own natural path rather than trying to make lucid dreaming happen.

Most dreamers experience lucidity at some point, and it naturally evolves as a skill if you pay attention to your dreaming process and your personal development. You can still apply active awareness by working on your dreams alone and/or with a therapist, but I think that attempts to provoke lucidity with the technical, impatient, and ambitious part of the mind are about as useful as similar attempts to provoke spiritual enlightenment.

A common way that the dreaming process teaches you about lucidity is the light-switch dream, in which you are wandering around your house and try to turn on a light. You find that you can’t press the switch, and you panic and think that you will be stuck in the dark. What is actually happening is that you are out of your physical body and wandering around your house in your dreaming body. Eventually, instead of panicking, you say to yourself, “Oh, if I can’t turn the light on, I must not be in my physical body, so that means I must be dreaming!” At that point, all kinds of interesting things start to happen in your dreams.

One of the main benefits of lucidity is the development in awareness that comes with it. This new awareness makes one more able to tolerate and be alert in altered states of consciousness, which prepares us for different states of being, such as those we experience when giving birth or dying.
