Pick a design pattern for your pathway. Will this be a true maze, or just a wandering walkway? Do you want it to be incorporated into the garden—that is, weaving between your crop rows, centered among the plants, and so on? Or would you prefer to have your path near a sectioned-off garden, leading you around certain areas or plant rows? If you do not know and just want to try it out, it may help to browse templates for maze designs online or find one through other research. Depending on your spiritual practice, the actual path can be another form of expression. Designs can create crosses, fish, stars, mandalas, or whatever you would prefer. Just draw it out.

Bring your drawing or template out to your garden site and survey where you would be building this. What obstructions might there be—tree roots, large stones, buildings? Are there hills or other features of the terrain? You may be able to incorporate these into your path, but if they have not already been considered, this is the time to plan around any that you see. It may also spark some other ideas to be there. Walk the area and imagine what your walkway will look like and how it will flow with your garden and other landscaping. While doing this, consider views that hold any significance, plants that you want to pass next to, and areas that need to be a part of it.

Lay the path. If you will be planting to create boundaries, just mark off where you would like people to walk. Line your path with whatever materials you have chosen. Something to consider here is how you would like to maintain the path. Will this space be large enough to require routine mowing or trimming? Some opt for the use of stone pavers as an easy and reversible option. Gravel and pebblestone can also be used, but this is usually costly, and some small stones will likely end up among your plants. Also, weeds will undoubtedly pop up between the stones, so you may want to lay black tarp or some other means of control beforehand. For a simpler process, setting pieces of wood, bricks, stone, or pavers is sufficient.

Accentuate. Once you have laid the path of your walk, think of what you would like to see. This would be the time to place any statues, birdbaths, fountains, tapestry, or trellises in their spots. Consider which plants you will grow in various areas. How will they grow as they mature—will they vine, branch widely, or cover the ground? Take all this into account. For instance, the vining growth of cucumbers can be combined with a decorative trellis. Or the tall growth of sunflowers or corn could add obstruction and boundary to a pathway. Elephant ears may add good shade for your meditation area or pond. Vibrantly colored flowers may be bunched together for a beautiful scene around a spiritually significant figurine. If you take the time to know your
