Chapter 28

The GUC started to glow a bright orange. Astar looked outside his impenetrable office at the sight now unfolding. He ran to his desk and cracked the wood, throwing his hand to the intercom. He felt his titanium bones jar against the force.

“What the fuck is going on?” he shouted, his dark hair now coated in sweat.

I swear to God, Gabriel. If you’re behind this. I’m going to hunt you down in this city myself. You won’t be able to hide once I start looking.

There was no answer on the line.

“I said, ‘What the fuck is going on?!’” His face turned a bright red with the influx of blood rushing to his skin.

Astar picked up the small intercom and tossed it into the glass. It bounced off and shattered against the floor. He looked up to the ceiling.

“Do you have any clue?”

“No, sir. I’m trying to contact anyone, but all the lines are dead. In the Capitol and going out to the other cities,” the feminine voice responded.

Astar trotted over to the glass and stared out at the scene.

It’s the Hyperline. Someone knocked out the Hyperline. There’s a communication line running through that tunnel. Someone knocked out my fucking Hyperline.

“Ask the Hive what’s going on. Now!”

“They’re quiet, sir. None of them are speaking.”

“Shit,” Astar ran to the far wall near the entrance to his office. He pressed on the mahogany wood, and it slid away revealing a red phone.

“I’ll fucking kill you. I’ll fucking kill you all myself,” he muttered.

Never thought I’d need this.

He picked up the receiver. The dial tone was intact. The buttons were quickly depressed by his half-human fingers. It rang.

“Astar?”

“What’s going on?”

“I have no clue. There’s no comms down here in the labs. I can’t contact the Hive. And the doors are locked. None of my overrides are working.”

“Of course,” Astar mumbled. “Okay,” he took a breath trying to regain any composure he could muster. “We need to figure out what’s going on and why the Hive isn’t responding to us.”

“Can you dial us into the Cortex room?”

I’ll have you killed for that. The audacity to direct me.

“Nevermind. I got them being paged now, Astar.”

“It’s ‘Sir,’” he snapped back.

The man on the other end of the line stopped speaking. The phone line continued ringing. Astar heard him gulp in the silence.

“Hello?” another voice answered.

“What’s going on in the Cortex?” Astar asked.

“They’re not talking.”

“We know that.”

“No, I mean they aren’t talking. At all. I’m looking at the sphere of their consciousness right now. Normally it lights up blue, and the little bumps across it show us that they’re transferring data between each other. But they’re not. It’s a perfectly smooth gray sphere now. They aren’t doing anything.”

What the hell is going on?

“I’ll be down there momentarily.” Astar smacked the red phone back into its resting place. He hoped he’d never have to use it again.
