Alternatives to a Traditional Tree

Not everyone loves Christmas trees. If you are someone that finds them too much faff to put up, you don’t have the space, or would like to take a totally different approach that is really eco-friendly, here are some alternative Christmas tree ideas you could try.

If you already have a large indoor plant, just decorate it at Christmas time!

Try a Christmas-lights tree, where you create a tree shape by securing fairy lights to a piece of plywood. This will create a glowing Christmas tree you can still gather around.

You can easily repurpose leftover tomato cages from the summer and turn them into cute little Christmas trees to be used as either indoor or outdoor decorations.

Book lovers can create a book tree. Once your books are piled high in the shape of a Christmas tree, just hang some foraged garlands from it, throw a star on top, and voila.

Make a rustic birch branch Christmas tree. If you know someone with a birch tree in their garden, then you might not have to spend anything at all to make this one. The best time to prune a birch tree is early autumn so you will have to pre-plan. But once Christmas time comes around, simply place your branch in a pot, hang any ornaments you already have, and job done.

For a recycled option, grab some cardboard and upcycle it into a Christmas tree. You could either cut out your tree shape and hang it on the wall or even create a 3D tree. Once you have the structure of your tree set up, you can make a fun project out of decorating it with everything from homemade ornaments to handwritten notes.
