Chapter

sixteen

Elwood saw Chais collapse. The colonel fell like his strings were cut, eyes dull and unfocused. Three days. Three damn days of travelling with a stranger who refused to disclose her ancestry, trying to teach his body to function again, just to save Chais. He sighed and smiled fondly. How the man survived this long was a mystery.

Elwood cut down a lugaire—where were they coming from?—and stepped toward where Chais was sprawled. The palace garden was swarming with the demon hounds. Yet, not a single summoner, apart from the one he had come with, was within sight. Nor, strangely, was a guard. Wary to avoid the teeth, Elwood tore his way through them as he tried to clear a way to the fallen colonel. He pushed through the swarm of hounds, ripping through any that got too close with a flick of his bow. Elwood kept an eye on Chais the entire time. He blasted away any dogs that neared the colonel in hopes of keeping him in one piece until Elwood could reach him. However, at the speed he was going, Elwood doubted he’d make it there before one of the lugaires got lucky and tore out either his own or the Feykin’s throat. There were simply too many of them.

Rebme, seeing his predicament, held out a hand toward the pack of lugaires closest to him. Her eyes glowed faintly. Pale purple light illuminated her face. A dazed look seemed to glaze over their eyes and make them appear like dyed glass. The lugaires stumbled back before regaining their senses and turning on the remaining hellhounds. The summoner was still a mystery, but at least she was proving herself useful.

Neat trick, Relevard commented. He sounded interested in this new power. Now, stop staring and go help the Feykin.

“Yes, sir.” Elwood rolled his eyes. “Can’t you try to be nice for once in your life?” Relevard ignored him. Elwood sidestepped a lugaire but almost walked straight into another. He spun to prevent any further limb loss, resulting in its teeth tearing through his empty right sleeve. The Fey wanted to kick himself. He still wasn’t fast enough, wasn’t strong enough. If only he could heal faster.

“Dammit! Stupid mutt. I just got that!” Elwood frowned and beheaded the hounds with a flick of the wrist. He sighed and poked the ruined fabric lightly. He would just have to steal another one from the next village.

Elwood kneeled next to the fountain where Chais collapsed and assessed his situation. A streak of red on the wall behind the colonel gave a warning that he was injured. He pulled up a wall of air that would alert him to anyone who entered its radius. Elwood leaned down and positioned the unconscious colonel on his back like a sack of potatoes. Using his single hand to maneuver the man into a more comfortable position, he searched the chaos for a small, curly haired woman.

A streak of fur and claws came barreling at his face instead. Elwood barely ducked fast enough to avoid horrible scarring.
