One of the best skills any CEO wearing the Architect hat can hone is the ability to say no to anything that doesnât add value to the business.
While it might seem counterintuitive at first, one of the best skills any CEO wearing the Architect hat can hone is the ability to say no to anything that doesnât add value to the business. In fact, your âDonât-Doâ list should be ten times as long as your âTo-Doâ list. We work with one CEO, for example, who is considering entering the residential HVAC market, which is a complex business. But he has also made the decision not to enter the business if he canât develop a simple and elegant business model, one that incorporates a limited inventory and has a compelling offer and simple processes. Thatâs how important simplicity and focus should be for you as the Architect of your company. If you canât do simple, perhaps you shouldnât be in the business.
What defines you as a business leader is what you say no to. So be aggressive in saying no to new initiatives and refocus your team on the core business. Being the best in class with a clear value proposition and well-selected customers will ultimately yield far higher returns over the long run.
