Is this the appropriate person to be talking to about this?
Does this person have the authority to move my idea forward?
Can this person deny my request?
What’s in it for them?
Knowing your audience allows you to anticipate possible reactions to whatever you say. How are the people you are talking to likely to interpret what you have to say? What questions might they have? What do they need to hear to green light your initiative? Anticipating possible reactions gives you an opportunity to prepare appropriate responses ahead of time to questions or concerns. If you can predict someone’s concerns, you can tailor your message to allay those concerns.
It’s also important to know your audience so that you deliver the right message.
Anne once attended a speaking event at a university where the audience consisted mostly of executive women who were well established in their careers. The speaker was also a successful woman, however, she was unable to connect with the audience. Why? She addressed the roomful of executives as if they were college graduates just starting out in their careers. The speaker gave a very insightful and helpful presentation, but to the wrong audience.
