Penny ran upstairs. I wish I could join up with Gracie. Opening the bedroom door, she headed straight for the walnut wardrobe. She rummaged through the clothes, hoping for inspiration.

“Have you found anything yet?” asked Gracie coming into the bedroom.

“No. What about this?” Penny pulled out a pale green silk day dress.

“Are there going to be any men at this tea party?”

Penny shook her head. “I don’t think so. Why?”

“If it is just ladies, this would be more appropriate.” Gracie picked out a blue velvet dress. It had a modest bodice with a pleated skirt that fell just below the knees.”

Penny pulled a face but Gracie insisted.

“You have to look the part or you will only upset your aunt.”

Penny started to get dressed. “I wish I could join up. I’d do anything, even work on those balloons you were talking about. Although, I am not sure what they are for.”

“Charlie says they are designed to stop the enemy from flying low down and being able to drop his bombs more accurately. The balloon gets in their way and forces the planes to fly at a higher altitude. The idea is that the higher they are forced to fly, the less accurate their bomb dumps will be. Also, our men can find them easier if they cannot sink low into the clouds.”

Penny tried, but couldn’t contain the giggles any longer.

“You should listen to yourself. It’s Charlie this and Charlie that. I think the main reason you want to join the WAAF’s so that you can keep tabs on Charlie.”

Gracie blushed. “Well, that was part of the reason, but don’t you think that the girl in the air force blue uniform on the WAAF recruiting poster looks ever so smart? Although, of course, I want to be near Charlie, if I can.”

“Pity they don’t let woman join the RAF or you could be in the same squadron.”

Gracie threw the pillow at Penny. “Now you are just being silly.”

“I will miss you so much when you go. Do you know the date yet?”

“Well, I have to pass the interview first so I am not sure how long it will take. Don’t worry, you will be busy. I thought you were volunteering at the hospital? That will help you make friends. You can always come over to my house to see me when I get leave. I will write to you, too.”

“Make sure you do. I want to know everything, so when my time comes I will be so knowledgeable that they will accept me straight away. It is so exciting, isn’t it?”

“Yes, it is.”

“Are you scared?”

“Well, a little bit, but that’s because I won’t know anyone. But then, I will think of you and all you have achieved since you arrived here, looking like something the cat dragged in.”

Penny laughed and looked in the mirror. “I am not sure that Aunt Louise would see much improvement if she could see me now.”

“I don’t know. She may think that feathers in your hair is a new fashion trend.
