No More Chances after Death?

According to Hebrews 9:26–27, “[Christ] has appeared once for all at the culmination of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself. Just as people are destined to die once, and after that to face judgment . . . .” In the discussion about eternal destinies, the phrase from this verse about people being destined to die once and after that to face judgment is often used to defeat the idea that there can be postmortem opportunities for salvation. However, what this verse states does not conflict with the final salvation of all because judgment is part of the path towards salvation for those who need it. The context of the verse has to do with Christ’s unique, unrepeatable sacrifice of himself. Whereas the sacrifices outlined in the Old Testament had to be repeated, Christ’s sacrifice was sufficient for all time.
