Just when Grace thought she was getting somewhere, she was pulled several steps backwards. The Barnstead residents she’d met so far were holding up a wall, barricading themselves from sharing any information on the property where Cole’s Snack Shack was back in the seventies. She pushed the door open, feeling foolish for even thinking it would be that easy. You can’t just approach a local in a small town you’ve never been to without being greeted with some resistance.

She released one long exhale, and moved through the humidity toward the Jeep, where Mark was now leaning over the backseat window, chatting away with Ellie. At least she had this. She had a boyfriend who happened to be the best father in the world, and she had a daughter who had bettered her life by leaps and bounds. She didn’t need to solve every case. She could still move on. Maybe it was time to just let go and force the visions out of her head, move on from the begs and pleads of the victims that arrived unexpectedly and remained until she solved their case and brought them justice. Was that even possible? She’d heard of psychics forgoing their abilities and blocking them out, mediums who refused to talk to the dead, so surely, she could block it all out and just live a normal life. A quiet life with her boyfriend who she could one day call husband and her daughter who she adored.

“Hey!” A female voice pulled her from the negative thoughts that were rolling through her head. Just as she was about to reach the side of the Jeep, where Mark would insist on an update of her visit to the store, she turned and saw the woman who was the mother of Charlotte. Grace prepared herself for another scolding. Maybe this woman was born and raised on the lake that wanted nothing to do with her. Maybe she too, would suggest she leave and never come back.

Grace smiled anyway. “Hi.”

“Sorry, I don’t mean to be nosey but I overheard your conversation with Clyde.”

Grace looked at the woman with confusion. “Who?”

“Sorry, Clyde…he’s the guy you were talking to. The prickly one.”

“Oh, yeah…” Grace had no idea where this was going but at least the woman agreed that the guy was a jerk.

“Sorry, I just assumed you knew him…everyone around here does but I take it you’re not from Barnstead.”

“How can you tell?” Grace smirked. She could feel Mark standing closer to her, and the sound of Ellie chanting “Mama” in the background.

“Well, besides the fact that the license plate that you’re standing in front of says Massachusetts, you don’t exactly scream Barnstead.” She paused, looking around as if to make sure no one was listening to them. “I’m Elizabeth. My grandmother has a place on the lake…and I know what you’re talking about…Cole’s Snack Shack and Marina.” Elizabeth had a gleam in her eye. “My grandmother…well, she’s told us many stories over the years…God bless her. Some I believe and well, others I think she has a tendency to embellish to put it lightly.
