CHAPTER SIX

After Grace told Munson she was going to peruse the tables and scope out the snack offerings, she strolled the outline of the gymnasium while sipping on an overly tart Dixie cup of apple cider. She stopped at the wall and scanned the paper leaves for Evan’s name. Some of the names were hard to decipher. Even in all caps, a few of them looked like a foreign language, possibly the work of the kindergarten and first graders who were here earlier, according to the teacher at the apple cider table. The annoyed woman vented to Grace about the long day of dealing with excited kids. Maybe you should’ve chosen a different field, lady.

She tossed her half empty Dixie cup in the nearby trash and stood in front of the leaf wall with her arms crossed over her chest.

“That’s mine!” A little girl with thick glasses jumped in front of her and stabbed a yellow leaf with a pointy finger. The writing was messy, but Grace could detect the word Ellie somewhere behind a giant E and i. She was thin, too thin. She seemed overly excited about her work on the wall, compared to the other kids her age who were clumped into groups partaking in handshakes and random dance moves like the ones Grace had witnessed on her rare social media scrolls.

“Well, that’s a pretty nice leaf.” Grace felt her voice naturally slip into a sing-song tone. She knew nothing about kids and as far as she was concerned, Ellie was no different in age than the toddler neighbor she had a handful of interactions with. She stood so close, Grace could smell the fruity scent of her hair and recognize that her eyes, two giant saucers behind the lenses, were an emerald green. “What grade are you in?”

“Third.” Ellie stepped side to side and switched her hand positioning multiple times before she settled them in a clasped position on her head.

“Hey, you don’t happen to know a boy named Evan Goodman, do you?” Grace dove right it. Ellie didn’t seem privy to the rest of the students in the room, lost in her own world.

She scrunched her nose up and cocked her head to the side. “Evan from the bus?”

“Is that Evan Goodman?”

“I….think….so.” Ellie’s eyes were now flitting side to side as she craned her neck, in an attempt to peek over Grace’s shoulder.

“What does Evan look like?”

Ellie shrugged her shoulders. “Yellow hair.” And then she skipped off into a sea of moving bodies.

“Yellow hair?” Grace said under her breath, assuming Ellie meant blond. She scanned the gym, pausing her gaze on every blond boy in the room. The majority of the boys had long hair that flopped in their eyes, the girls wore theirs pulled back into ponytails and braids, decorated with sparkly bows and fluorescent scrunchies.

Grace rationalized that a boy who dressed as Batman would likely be a boy who was interested in sports. In the corner of the gym, a circle of third graders were passing a soccer ball to one another in a casual game.
