4. MEET PEOPLE WHERE THEY ARE.

Empathy—we’re told that we need it, but many of us are not quite sure what it is. I am talking about empathy in this book for entrepreneurs and changemakers because we need empathy as a guide. While we lead with focus and energy, and intense concentration on our journey, we also need empathy for our peers, colleagues, and business partners, but also for those who will use our products and services. A company cannot remain viable if its CEO has lost his or her capacity to empathize. It will never create the kind of working environment where everyone can flourish. A company culture that permits prejudice, bullying, and exclusion among employees is also one that hinders a free flow of ideas and outcomes.

We get distracted by the idea of empathy as being something like sympathy, compassion, or even mind-reading. Empathy is none of these things. There is nothing sentimental about it; empathy is simply another data point that enables you to recognize the reality of your situation. It is meeting people where they are. Empathy doesn’t always take us directly to a place where we know what someone is thinking, but it leads us to ask the questions we wouldn’t otherwise ask. We need to remain aware of others in our lives—our employees and our customers—to make sure that we are meeting their needs on our way to success.

In the end, empathy always wins because it brings you, the entrepreneur, closer to your leadership team, your employees, and your customers.

As entrepreneurs, we need to control what we can, keep analytics in its place, not buy our own narrative, and remain empathetic.

Uncertainty is not an impediment to change. It’s how you respond to uncertainty that will prove either an impediment or an asset for you.

Make uncertainty your companion. Look at uncertainty as a commodity. Like equity, patents, and products, uncertainty is one of the many components an entrepreneur has to deal with every day. It is your business to learn how to work with uncertainty, to trade one known or unknown for another.
