Social Enterprise

Social enterprise is a form of Social Innovation. A social enterprise is an organization that applies commercial strategies to maximize improvements in human and environmental well-being — this may include maximizing social impact rather than profits for external shareholders.

Social enterprise, like non-profits and charities, have important roles in society. Non-profit organizations play an important role of providing public services to communities where they operate, making them an intermediary between citizens and authorities.

Non-profits perform a variety of tasks and they largely get their funding from donations and grants. They are allowed to make profits, and they will not be taxed as long as profits generated will be used to achieve the mission. They also operate no under distribution constraints and are responsive to donors and board members.

A social enterprise is a business that adopts a social value and exhibits a heightened sense of accountability towards the constituents served. As a business, it has to make a profit to be sustainable, and the profits can go towards individuals running the organization.

Corporations are businesses that focus on maximizing shareholder value. Their primary goal is to make a profit for the owner.

Governments get their funding from taxes and are accountable to the voters. There is a lot of bureaucracy in the way of getting things done and the projects are generally large scale.
