CHAPTER 6

The evening before, Sara had found the time, while Mark was having a much-needed soak in the bath, to make copious notes of what the team should be delving into next as part of the investigation.

After she arrived at the station, she poured herself a coffee to assist her morning chore of dealing with the post. She was on a roll, and with minimal mail to deal with, she felt this was her lucky week. Then she called a meeting with the rest of the team. “Right, as you’re aware, I’m guilty of screwing up on the Moses case yesterday; the less said about that the better. From now on, we’re going to dig deeper than we’ve ever done during an investigation to make up for that mistake. Are you with me?”

“That’s an unnecessary question for you to have to ask, Inspector,” Christine replied.

“Thanks. You guys are great… the greatest according to what DCI Price told Mr Moses yesterday. Let’s ensure we pull all our experience together and come up with a solution that will bring these two teenagers home. First of all, Barry, I know it’s going to be an endless chore, but I still believe it’s a route we need to tackle all the same. I want you to gather all the CCTV footage together and go over it, frame by frame. I think we need to concentrate on the Sophie case first because we’re aware that Daniel made it home the night before last. Which reminds me, I need to chase up SOCO, see if they found anything untoward at the house.”

“Will do, boss. I might need a hand, if I get overwhelmed.”

“Give me a shout and I’ll get Craig to join you. As it is, I need him for something else.”

He gave her a thumbs-up.

“Craig, I’d like you and Christine to go through the system, see if there are any paedophile rings operating in the area which are currently under investigation. If there aren’t, I need you to check how many paedophiles have been locked up in the last ten years or so, and if any have been released in the past month.” She mulled over the length of time and corrected herself. “Make that the last couple of months. If that’s what we’re dealing with here, they’re bound to have been on their best behaviour for a few weeks before getting up to mischief, if their rehabilitation wasn’t up to scratch in prison.”

“Leave it with us, boss,” Craig said.

Christine nodded.

“Marissa and Jill, I want you to work together. Look into both families’ backgrounds. We’ve already covered Todd’s, but dig deeper.”

“And what do you want me to do?” Carla asked.

“While I chase up SOCO, can you contact all the ports and airports? Issue the relevant alert for the kids.”

Carla pulled a face.

“Something wrong?”

“I just feel we should have already had that in place.”

“You’re right, but there’s no need to rub it in, partner. This is us starting over, from scratch. Addressing what we should have had in place from day one.
