CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

“Your girl put on quite a show.” Ziva glanced at Vincent as he picked up the washtub full of dishes. “Trouble in paradise?”

“What makes you say that?” He opened up the industrial dishwasher and started stacking plates.

“A witch’s powers are directly linked with her emotions.” She leaned her backside against the counter and crossed her arms. “That was a lot of energy to expend on training.”

“She had a point to prove to herself.” He shrugged. “Last time was pretty rough. The whole tribe is watching, and she’s still working out her role.”

“And you…” Ziva nodded to the plate in his hands. “I’ve never seen an alpha doing dishes.”

“Normally, it’s Eddie and Ben on Wednesday nights.” Vincent smiled. “Elaina graciously excluded me from the chore-chart, so I’m able to pick up slack where it’s needed.”

“That’s an interesting take on it.” She leaned back, exposing more cleavage than she already was. “What about your needs?”

“Being an alpha isn’t about exploiting the people under you. It’s about making sure the people you’re responsible for have everything they need.”

Her innuendo seemed to go right over his head as he closed the washer.

“And I think tonight they all just needed to get some rest.”

“You don’t sleep much, do you?” She reached out and touched his arm. “You know I could give you something that would help with that.”

“You’re such an angel.” He smiled. “I’ve never been a fan of taking medication that alters my state of consciousness. My spirit animal is… Well, he can be dangerous.”

“I bet.” Ziva circled behind him, trailing her hand up to his bicep. “That’s a lot of power you’re holding back. It must feel like the weight of the world on these shoulders.”

He groaned as she massaged his shoulders and the sides of his neck. “It’s in the job description.” He chuckled. “My grandmother… You know what, never mind.”

“No, tell me.” Her hands slid over his shoulder-blades and down as she backed away. “All the best stories begin with grandmothers.”

“She always told me the moment an alpha stops worrying is the moment everyone else should start.” Sadness clouded his eyes. “I didn’t appreciate her when she was around. She was so overbearing, and I couldn’t wait to get away. By the time I understood how right she was, it was too late. I never got to tell her that I was sorry.”

“What happened to her?” Ziva sat down at the table and leaned forward to pat the seat next to her.

Vincent closed the dishwasher and turned it on. Her breasts pressed together every time she breathed. Sleek and plump, they were barely contained at the top of her white dress, and the gossamer material left very little to the imagination. His mouth watered, but he forced himself to look at the dishtowel in his hands.

“Come sit beside me.” She crossed her legs, and the slit fell open up to her hip. “You’re so guarded, and you haven’t let me read you.”

“I’m sure that must be frustrating.” A half-smile reached his eyes.
